Dates and the pivot year
YYMMDD, validity checks and the two-digit-year problem.
Birth and expiry dates use six digits: YYMMDD. Because the century is not stored, the reader must decide whether a two-digit year is in the past or the future using a pivot year (often the current year).
- Month must be 01-12 and the day must exist in that month.
- A date of birth cannot be in the future.
- An expiry date in the past makes the document expired (a warning, not an error).
- Unknown day or month may be filled with '<' in specific cases.
