TD1, TD2, TD3 and visas
The five MRZ shapes and how to tell them apart.
The shape (number of lines and width) plus the first character identify the format.
| Format | Lines | Typical document | First char |
|---|---|---|---|
| TD1 | 3 × 30 | ID card (credit-card size) | A, C or I |
| TD2 | 2 × 36 | ID card | A, C or I |
| TD3 | 2 × 44 | Passport | P |
| MRV-A | 2 × 44 | Visa | V |
| MRV-B | 2 × 36 | Visa | V |
Emergency travel documents use the same geometry as TD2 ('PU') or TD3 ('PE') but with their own document codes.
