Names in the MRZ
Primary and secondary identifiers, fillers and truncation.
- The name field holds the primary identifier, then two '<' (the part separator), then the secondary identifier.
- Within a part, a single '<' separates components such as given names.
- Names are transliterated to A-Z; no diacritics or punctuation appear in the MRZ.
- Titles (Dr, Mr) and suffixes (Jr) are normally excluded unless legally part of the name.
- If a name is long, it is truncated; the last character of a truncated name must be a letter, and the remainder is filled with '<'.
